TransContainer expands container fleet by 30% as foreigners leave

MOSCOW, Feb 8 (PRIME) -- Leading railway container operator TransContainer has expanded its container fleet by 30% on the year to 130,000 units in 2022 thanks to foreign shippers’ leaving Russia, the company said in a statement on Wednesday.

The combined capacity of the containers, including bulk, open top, and hard open top containers increased to almost 200,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) from 150,000 TEUs.

Initially, the company planned to acquire 8,600 containers with a combined capacity of 12,500 TEUs in 2022, but it more than doubled spending on new containers to 9 billion rubles from 4 billion rubles acquiring 23,700 large containers with a capacity of more than 37,600 TEUs in the wake of foreign shipping companies’ withdrawal from Russia that reduced the amount of containers in the country.

Besides containers, the company acquired about 2,600 container platforms worth almost 8 billion rubles last year.
